Two Teams Emerge As Frontrunners In Garrett Crochet Trade Sweepstakes

The Boston Red Sox appear at least be in the mix to trade for Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet.

But they reportedly aren’t in a leading position at the moment to land the left-handed ace.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman, who cited a report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, wrote Thursday night that two frontrunners have emerged in the Crochet trade sweepstakes. And they both are already well-equipped to win a World Series in 2025.

“The Dodgers and Phillies are among teams at the forefront of talks,” Heyman wrote.

Heyman noted that it isn’t just the Dodgers and Phillies in contention for Crochet, who put together an All-Star campaign this past season by posting a 3.58 ERA, 1.068 WHIP and 209 strikeouts in 146 innings.

Heyman reported the Baltimore Orioles and New York Mets are both “in” on trading for the 25-year-old. There was no mention of the Red Sox by Heyman.

Crochet is expected to land the White Sox a sizable haul, including a “blue-chip prospect,” according to Heyman. The Red Sox certainly have those in their deep farm system, but whether they are willing to part with any of them remains to be seen. The Orioles also have an influx of young talent that might be even better than Boston’s and has big-league experience already.

It looks the Red Sox have work to do if they want to acquire Crochet, but with a deal not looking imminent, they could really improve their positioning in about a month at the MLB Winter Meetings.
