Drake Maye Reaffirms Stance After Patriots Denied Hail Mary Opportunity

Drake Maye knows he can let the ball fly when he needs to. The New England Patriots probably should have trusted him to do so in Week 13.

The Patriots allowed a late touchdown and two-point conversion to the Indianapolis Colts. New England trailed 25-24 and had one final play from midfield. The Patriots did not have Maye heave a Hail Mary attempt and instead opted for kicker Joey Slye to try a 68-yard field goal. The try, that would have set an NFL record, fell short for the loss.

Maye did not throw anybody under the bus when asked about the decision after the game but reiterated Monday that’s a throw he can definitely make for the Patriots.

“I think anytime you’re on the 50, midfield if you can’t make that throw, I’m not sure you should be in the NFL,” Maye shared on the “WEEI Afternoon Show” Monday. “Had a chance at a Hail Mary, but like I said, what Joey felt like, special teams coordinator and Coach Mayo was ready for whatever the team decided. Yeah, if you can’t make a Hail Mary from 50 yards, I think you may be playing the wrong sport.”

Maye shows his legitimate arm strength on a weekly basis for the Patriots. While there’s far more than that that goes into completing a Hail Mary, New England has the quarterback that can give them a shot.
