'I've said it before, hes' the head coach of the offense'
Jerod Mayo continues to talk out of both sides of his mouth whenever he’s questions about the New England Patriots’ play calling.
It happened again following the Patriots’ 30-17 loss against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.
Immediately following the game, Mayo essentially called out offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt for play-calling decisions. But, in true Mayo fashion, he walked back those comments during his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.”
“I tried to clarify that with the next question in saying ‘ultimately it’s my decision,'” Mayo told WEEI. “Ultimately, all those decisions — offensively, defensively and special teams — they fall on me. So, I just want to get that out there.”
When pressed for answers on how involved he is in the Patriots’ offensive play-calling, Mayo continued with the confusing narrative.
“I give input on where I want the ball to go at times. I give input on whether we should run it or pass it at times,” Mayo said. “But I’ve said it before, hes’ the head coach of the offense. At times, I’m on the defensive channel talking to those guys. Making corrections and I have enough faith in AVP and the rest of the offensive staff to operate when I’m not on that channel.”
So, if Van Pelt is the “head coach of the offense,” doesn’t the play-calling fall on him, meaning Mayo’s initial comments would be valid? It’s hard to know what exactly is going on in New England, given the dysfunction within the Patriots coaching staff.
