Steve Cohen brought in the crown jewel of free agency
A recent report claimed the New York Yankees were leading the race to sign Juan Soto all the way up until the 11th hour.
In fact, even the person who made the winning bid thought the generational outfielder was going to stay in the Bronx.
Soto ultimately decided to leave the Yankees after one highly successful season to join the Mets. The National League East club paid up and then some to land the four-time All-Star, who reportedly will rake in a record-breaking $765 million over 15 years in Queens.
But even with a historic offer on the table, Mets owner Steve Cohen still thought Soto was going to stick with the Yankees.
“I was being logical,” Cohen told the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. “When you have (Aaron) Judge, it’s tough to beat that. Juan was great. But what they had … I didn’t know how to solve that.”
To be fair, it wasn’t like money was the only thing the Mets had to offer Soto. Cohen’s club also had a very successful 2024 season led by one of the best players in the game. And with Soto now teamed up with Francisco Lindor, the Mets are in a good spot to give the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers a run for their money next season.
As for the Yankees, they will have to pivot and find new players who can complement Judge.
