Pete Alonso probably isn't coming to Boston
The Red Sox aren’t exactly boom-or-bust when it comes to their pursuit of Juan Soto, but there are a few notable names that probably don’t make sense.
New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, for instance.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Buster Olney discussed all things free agency on Thursday, including potential landing spots for the likes of Alonso, Soto and Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames.
Boston could conceivably sign either of the latter two options, but the former simply isn’t a fit.
“I agree that Alonso might have to wait — and unlike Adames, he’s not a great fit for some of the teams involved with Soto,” Olney wrote. “… The Red Sox are already saturated with 1B/DH types, so he’s probably not an option for them. The best possible outcome for Alonso will be if Soto signs with some team other than the Mets, because in the end, Alonso is worth more to the Mets than he is to any other team, as a popular, homegrown player.”
Alonso put together some decent numbers with New York, slashing .249/.339/.514 with 226 home runs, 142 doubles and 586 RBIs across six seasons. The Red Sox would be much better served focusing their attention on the likes of Soto, and/or starting pitchers Max Fried and Corbin Burnes, however.
