Devin Williams is headed for The Bronx
The Yankees are flexing their muscles.
You know, as much as they possibly can after losing Juan Soto.
New York is finalizing a trade to acquire closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Milwaukee is receiving pitcher Nestor Cortes and second baseman Caleb Durbin in return, per the report.
Williams, 30, was one of the most coveted relievers on the market, having recorded a 1.25 ERA in 21 2/3 innings and earned 14 saves in 2024, a season that began with him recovering from a back injury. The Red Sox were said to be competing to acquire the two-time All-Star.
The Yankees needed to find a new closer, as Clay Holmes pulled a now-familiar move and drove across town to join the New York Mets. Cortes was viewed as expendable after the addition of left-handed starter Max Fried.
