MLB Rumors: Yankees ‘Wouldn’t Budge’ On This Trivial Juan Soto Ask

Steve Cohen couldn't have cared less about some suite at Citi Field

The suite life apparently was not something the Yankees were willing to offer Juan Soto.

New York Post’s Jon Heyman on Monday night reported on the factors that led to Soto’s decision to leave the Bronx Bombers and join the crosstown New York Mets and indicated even the most trivial played a role.

“All along, the Mets’ offers ran only slightly ahead, and it’s possible only relatively small things helped, too,” Heyman wrote.

Heyman cited a “combination of perks” which included a signing bonus of $75 million from the Mets (Yankees offered $60 million), escalators in the contract, a no-trade clause and other things. Among those “others things” was a suite for Soto’s family.

“The Yankees shouldn’t be faulted for bidding a whopping $760M, but they wouldn’t budge on the suite,” Heyman wrote. “The Yankees felt they couldn’t give a suite to Soto when Judge pays for his suite, and even Derek Jeter paid. They were willing to discount a suite but not alter their precedent.

“Cohen didn’t give the suite much of a thought.”

Nor should he.

It’s not as if a suite at Yankee Stadium was the standalone thing that prevented Soto from wearing pinstripes for another decade. The reported deal the Mets gave Soto (15 years, $765 million) was better than what the Yankees reportedly offered (16 years, $760 million). At one point, Cohen offered Soto $100 million at signing, per Heyman.

With those sorts of figures thrown around, it’s comical to think something so trivial played a role.
