Could Nolan Arenado be on the move?
The Boston Red Sox, among several needs this winter, could greatly benefit from right-handed pop in their lineup this winter.
Nolan Arenado continues to swirl around in trade rumors as the St. Louis Cardinals third baseman still has nearly $75 million left on his contract over the next three seasons. He would have to waive a no-trade clause in any of these scenarios.
The Red Sox would reportedly be one of six teams Arenado would waive that clause for, per MLB.com’s John Denton.
Arenado’s list of teams he would accept a trade to also includes the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Los Angeles Angels, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres.
The eight-time All-Star had a drop-off in power with 16 home runs in 152 games in 2024, though that could spark again playing half of his home games at Fenway Park in this hypothetical. It wasn’t that long ago that Arenado led the sports in WAR (Baseball Reference) and slugged 30 home runs during the 2022 campaign.
The Red Sox still have another day or so at the Winter Meetings to make a splash. Whether it’s adding the right-handed bat or finally getting a frontline starter, Boston must finish a deal.
