Boston is adding a big name to its bullpen
The Red Sox reportedly are approaching the finish line on a contract with a decorated veteran player.
No, we’re not talking about Juan Soto. At least not at this juncture.
Boston reportedly is set to add Aroldis Chapman to its bullpen. MassLive’s Chris Cotillo was the first to report about the Red Sox’s momentum on a Chapman deal Tuesday and ESPN’s Jeff Passan followed up with details about the one-year, $10.75 million pact, which will require a physical to be completed.
Chapman once was one of the most dominant relief pitchers in all of baseball, notching seven All-Star appearances between 2012 and 2021. The two-time World Series champion also has a good deal of postseason experience with 49 1/3 total innings worth of playoff appearances under his belt.
The 36-year-old is coming off a solid season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who saw Chapman log 61 2/3 total innings in 2024, his most since 2015. Prior to his bounce-back campaign with the Bucs, Chapman logged significant American League East experience via six-plus seasons with the New York Yankees.
Chapman is set to join a Red Sox bullpen that stood to add another left-hander. Boston brought in another southpaw, Justin Wilson, earlier in the offseason to bolster the group.
