Why MLB Insider Believes Red Sox Won’t Make Push For Corbin Burnes

Should Boston still pursue Burnes?

The Boston Red Sox finally made a big splash by acquiring pitcher Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox.

Is that reason, and that reason alone, MLB Insider Mark Feisand believes the Red Sox are out on making a pitch for Corbin Burnes.

“Corbin Burnes is very interesting. I think the (Max) Fried deal set his market where you’re now looking at probably more than $245 million for Corbin Burnes,” Feisand said on MLB Network. “… I think Toronto’s in it for sure. San Francisco’s still in it. I thought Boston was going to be in it; the Crochet deal may take them out of that. They may not feel the urgency to spend that kind of money.

“Toronto, to me, seems like a team, they have money burning a hole in their pocket. They wanted to give $700 million dollars to Juan Soto. Last year, they wanted to give it to (Shohei) Ohtani. They have to get a big win. … Toronto, to me, seems like a team that might be motivated to try to get Corbin Burnes.”

New York Post’s Jon Heyman agreed with Feisand and believes the Blue Jays and Giants are front runners to land Burnes.

“Burnes is just so durable. You just don’t see durable aces out there on the market,” Heyman said. “… I think you got the right two teams. Toronto and San Francisco those are two teams that have had trouble luring stars. Keep in mind, (Burnes) is a Californian.”

Heyman added that Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey met with Burnes’ agent Scott Boras on tuesday, but quickly added that doesn’t equate to a deal being made.
