Logan Ryan isn't fond of Matt Patricia
It’s been nearly a decade since they’ve worked together, but Logan Ryan still isn’t a fan of Matt Patricia.
Ryan — who has the distinct notion of playing under both Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel during his stints with the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans — discussed the similarities and differences between the two in an interview with Karen Guregian of MassLive.
The 33-year-old clearly is a fan of Vrabel, endorsing him as the choice to take over in New England while also throwing a shot in the direction of a certain former coach of his.
“I felt like players felt when Matt Patricia wasn’t being himself. Or Josh McDaniels wasn’t being himself. They didn’t like playing for those guys,” Ryan said. “So in my opinion, Vrabel has some similarities to Bill, but that’s who Vrabel was.
“Vrabel’s also a trash-talker. Bill’s not a trash-talker. Vrabel’s a trash-talker in practice. I’m sure if you covered him as a player, he was a trash-talker as a player … guys understood he was an alpha, that’s his personality. You’re not an alpha coach if you’re a nerd, rocket scientist coach who is trying to act like an alpha. Guys see right through it. You’re not tough.”
Patricia, for those who haven’t caught on, was once on the path to becoming a rocket scientist as he majored in aeronautical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.
Ryan played under Patricia for four seasons in New England.
The Patriots are expected to soon decide on Vrabel, as they’re scheduled to interview him at Gillette Stadium on Thursday. New England also has interviews scheduled with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn over the weekend, though it’s a question as to whether it’ll get that far.
