Patriots Legend Vince Wilfork Bluntly Calls Out Team For ‘BS’ Move

'I think it was unfair'

Vince Wilfork believes Mike Vrabel is “phenomenal” and was the best coach the Patriots could have hired in this year’s cycle.

However, the legendary nose tackle wasn’t pleased with how the vacancy was created for his former New England teammate to fill.

Like fellow Patriots Super Bowl champion Benjamin Watson, Wilfork believes Jerod Mayo caught a raw deal in his first season as head coach in Foxboro, Mass.

“I think it was BS to pull that. And knowing Jerod personally, I know the conversations,” Wilfork told Fox News Digital. “I know what it is. It’s just hard to fathom, but that’s the business when you deal with certain people. I think it was unfair.”

Wilfork’s main point of contention was the situation inherited by Mayo, who took on a team that went an abysmal 4-13 in Bill Belichick’s final season with the Patriots.

“So what do you think Mayo was (going to) do with the same people Bill brought in? Mayo’s the one who found the future quarterback in Drake Maye,” Wilfork said. “It’s just unfortunate. But it’s part of the game, part of the business.”

Wilfork’s gripes are fair, and two things can be true about the Patriots’ coaching turnover. Mayo certainly was not set up to succeed in New England, but Vrabel probably is a better option in terms of turning the franchise around and establishing sustained success at One Patriot Place.

And like Wilfork mentioned, such changes come with the territory in the NFL.
