Patriots’ Robert Kraft Takes Full Responsibility For Jerod Mayo Disaster

'I put him in an untenable situation'

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft didn’t let there be any debate as to who was to blame for Jerod Mayo’s failure as head coach.

Kraft squarely pointed the finger at himself and made it clearly known he put things on his shoulders for how things went with Mayo at the helm at the start of his press conference Monday at Gillette Stadium.

“I’m going to be very brief here and say this whole situation is on me,” Kraft told reporters, per team-provided video. “I feel terrible for Jerod because I put him in an untenable situation. I know that he has all the tools as a head coach to be successful in this league. He just needed more time before taking the job. In the end, I’m a fan of this team first and now I have to go out and find a coach who can get us back to the playoffs and hopefully championships.”

Kraft chose Mayo as Bill Belichick’s hand-picked successor, but Mayo showed time and time again he was ill-prepared — both on and off the field — to handle all that comes with head coaching duties.

Kraft saw it, too, stating the Patriots “regressed” throughout the season before deciding to ultimately part ways with Mayo.

“I don’t like losing. I don’t like losing the way we lost,” Kraft said. “Things were not developing the way we would have liked. It was time to move on.”
