Rafael Devers Earns Ironic Position Rank Amid Red Sox Rumors

MLB Network appreciates Devers at third base

Rafael Devers put together another strong season in 2024, though his role for the Boston Red Sox dominated offseason headlines thus far.

Boston’s discussed right-handed additions to the lineup with hitters in Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado. Either of those potential moves would likely warrant the Red Sox to move Devers off the position in favor of capable defenders in Bregman or Arenado.

Alex Cora and Craig Breslow stuck to their belief all winter that Devers is Boston’s third baseman and that’s that. Ironically enough, MLB Network tabbed the Red Sox star among the best at his position.

The network often holds a top-10 ranking at each position before every year and released its third base rankings Wednesday. Devers finished second at the position, only falling short to Cleveland Guardians star Jose Ramirez.

Bregman finished third while Arenado came in at the No. 7 spot. How’s that for Devers to finish higher than the two leading candidates that would spark a position change for the Red Sox.

That’s one way to look at the list, not that is has any impact on how Boston should build the roster, though maximizing Devers as a hitter and adding quality defense and a veteran bat in Bregman or Arenado still should make all the sense in the world for the Red Sox.
