Red Sox’s Craig Breslow Offers Garrett Crochet Contract Talks Update

'I think those are conversations that will pick up'

The Boston Red Sox went all-in to acquire starting pitcher Garrett Crochet this offseason.

Boston chief baseball officer Craig Breslow traded four prospects, including catcher Kyle Teel and outfielder Braden Montgomery, to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Crochet back in December. It was a hefty price, but necessary as teams across the league scrambled for top-of-the-line starting pitching. Crochet, 25, fit the mold perfectly as a left-handed veteran but did spark a question.

With two seasons left of team control before Crochet becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2027, will the Red Sox succeed in retaining him?

“Obviously when you have someone as uniquely talented as Garrett is, and someone at this age and we feel like is going to help our team in the short term and potentially can help our team in the long term, it’s something that we have to be open to,” Breslow said on NESN’s “310 to Left” podcast. “But they also have to be open to it as well. And I think Garrett and I are still getting to know each other and by all accounts, his introduction to Boston, to the Red Sox and to our fans has been spectacular. So I think those are conversations that will pick up.”

Crochet broke out last season with Chicago, recording a 3.58 ERA as a first-time All-Star. He pitched a career-high 32 starts and 146 innings, striking out 209 batters and ascending to one of baseball’s bright up-and-coming starters. Now as a member of the Red Sox, Crochet will join fellow newcomers Walker Buehler and Patrick Sandoval in Boston’s new-and-improved starting rotation that’s poised to compete in 2025.
