Vrabel will ensure a few specific traits from Patriots players
FOXBORO, Mass. — Mike Vrabel will steer a different ship.
The New England Patriots’ recently named head coach is known for his ability to set a foundation and build a culture. That’s what made Vrabel the most attractive coaching candidate this offseason.
That’s going to come with a few “non-negotiables” for Vrabel’s players in Foxboro, Mass.
“Somebody told me a long time ago you can’t tell the difference between a player that’s afraid to do it or doesn’t know how to do it,” Vrabel said during his introductory press conference at Gillette Stadium on Monday. “They kind of just stand there with that look, and we’re not going to stand. We’re going to be moving. We’re going to demand effort and finish.
“People ask what non-negotiables are. Our effort and our finish is going to be the contract that we make with our teammates. That will be my job to make sure. That’s the greatest compliment that you could ever give a coach, by the way. Not that he has great plays or great blitz, it’s ‘Man, you guys, your players play their asses off.’ Trust me, when somebody that’s a respected coach tells you that, you’ll thank the players, and you’ll care about them, and you’ll do whatever you can for them because that’s the greatest compliment that you could ever get.”
Vrabel is hoping effort, finish and an overall shared vision from those within the organization will help the Patriots accomplish their goals.
