Story fully understands the nature of the business
Trevor Story knows the Red Sox are rock solid at third base, where a franchise cornerstone has shined for years.
However, Story also knows that when a supremely talented player wants to join your club, you have to at least take the call. Even if there’s not an obvious fit on paper.
Story on Saturday was asked about Boston potentially trading for Nolan Arenado, who reportedly wouldn’t hesitate to waive his no-trade clause to join the Red Sox. The veteran shortstop, who is close friends with Arenado, vocalized Boston’s fierce commitment to Rafael Devers while acknowledging the nature of the business.
“Raffy’s the face. He’s our best player,” Devers told reporters at Fenway Fest, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “I think it’s as simple as that we always want good players. Nolan has made it known that Boston is a place he’d love to be. That’s not any of the players here sitting here saying, ‘We’d rather have this guy, we’d rather have that guy.’ Raffy’s the guy. This is his team. It’ll always be his team. I think that’s something to make clear. If Hall of Fame players are reaching out to want to be on your team, that’s something that you have to entertain a little bit.”
Alex Cora also was asked about a potential Arenado trade Saturday. While the Red Sox manager largely deflected, he noted how the organization would speak with Devers before any potential third baseman addition was made.
So, no matter how things shake out, Boston figures to be in a great spot at the hot corner in 2025.
