Why Patriots Offer ‘Best’ Opportunity For Head Coach Mike Vrabel

'This did seem like it had everything'

The New England Patriots were eager to make Mike Vrabel an offer this offseason, but returning to Foxborough wasn’t his only offer.

Vrabel garnered interest from several organizations, including the New York Jets and the Chicago Bears before ultimately agreeing to take over in New England. There’s the eight seasons and three Super Bowls that Vrabel won with the Patriots during his playing days that make the fit ideal, however, New England also beats out others across the league for more reasons than one.

“I also think that the Patriots job is probably the best out of all the head-coaching opportunities,” the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed said on NESN’s “Boston Has Entered The Chat” podcast. “You’ve got the quarterback in Drake Maye, you’ve got $130 million in cap space, you’ve got the No. 4 overall pick. Elliot Wolf’s future as GM maybe possibly up in the air so you can even bring in some of your front office guys. I don’t think that the rest of the jobs out there might’ve had all of that that the Patriots could offer. … This did seem like it had everything that a head coach would want out of a job.”

During Vrabel’s introductory press conference at Gillette Stadium on Monday, the factor of having Maye was highlighted by Vrabel.

Maye, 22, showed flashes throughout his impressive rookie season in New England, finishing the year 225-of-338 for 2,276 yards, with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions across 12 starts. The North Carolina product provided the team its biggest glimmer of hope amid the disastrous 4-13, last-place run in 2024.
