Boston really wanted Bregman
Alex Bregman’s free agency was dragged out for quite a while, so it became easy to forget that the Red Sox newcomer once was viewed as a backup plan for many clubs.
Bregman entered the MLB offseason as one of the best position players on the open market, but not the best. That designation belonged to Juan Soto, who served as the biggest domino of the offseason. A popular theory was that once Soto signed, clubs would then shift their focus to other veteran sluggers like Bregman, Teoscar Hernández and Anthony Santander.
But Boston never viewed Bregman as some sort of consolation prize. As Scott Boras revealed after the infielder’s introductory Red Sox press conference Sunday, Craig Breslow and company had their eyes on Bregman from the get-go.
“Bregman was always part of it,” Boras told reporters, per WEEI’s Rob Bradford. “There was never any point where he wasn’t. I don’t know what they would have done if Juan had signed here, but my clear impression was that they were pursuing him (Bregman) no matter what.”
Boras seemingly wasn’t simply giving media speak in wake of a top client landing an expensive contract. As Bregman fielded questions from Red Sox reporters for the first time, the super-agent provided a detailed recap of Boston ownership’s aggressive approach to courting the two-time World Series champion.
Would the Red Sox also have loved to win the Soto sweepstakes? Probably. But between the Bregman signing and other key additions, Boston is geared up to play playoff baseball in 2025 — and beyond.
