Two Free Agents Red Sox Still Could Target During 2025 Spring Training

The Boston Red Sox nearly have a complete roster and positions are there to be won during spring training.

The upgrades across the starting rotation and the splash signing of Alex Bregman elevated the Red Sox to the level of a real contender entering this season. The roster looks far better than what Sam Kennedy referred to as “incomplete” in January.

Boston could still probably use another reliever, even with a recent reunion with Adam Ottavino on a minor-league deal. There are a few capable arms remaining in free agency and the Red Sox would be wise to take one more look.

Here are two free agents the Red Sox can still target in spring training.

David Robertson
Robertson is as established as any veteran reliever in the sport and still gets the job done into his late 30s.

He’s pitched for five teams over the last three years with no higher than a 3.03 ERA in that span. Boston would greatly benefit from Robertson’s innings beside Liam Hendriks, Aroldis Chapman and Justin Slaten.

Robertson would add another adult to the bullpen and a dependable veteran for Alex Cora to turn to in leverage spots.

Spencer Turnbull
Pitching coach Andrew Bailey could have another project if the Red Sox were to take a flyer on Turnbull.

The right-hander hasn’t been on the mound much, but he’s been productive when he has been. The former Detroit Tigers tallied a career-best 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024.

He may not be an immediate leverage arm, but there’s stuff there for the Red Sox to uncover.
