Red Sox Carry On Spring Training Tradition, Battle In Swing-Off

'Closest to the pin' is a fan-favorite in the Boston clubhouse

The Boston Red Sox usually find their way to have some fun during spring training. The last few years have centered around the golf clubs to do so.

From last year’s spring contest to the method of deciding the fantasy football draft order, Red Sox players continue to settle several competitions through a “closest to the pin” round.

That became the case again Wednesday on the sprint fields in Ft. Myers, Fla. with Romy Gonzalez and manager Alex Cora taking some early swings with their irons.

Eventually, it wasn’t a player or coach who won the round for the Red Sox. Instead, Boston baseball communications and media relations specialist Devin Benson had the winning shot when he hit the pin on his right-handed swing.

The Red Sox enabled their competitive juices early Wednesday before an evening Grapefruit League matchup with the Minnesota Twins.
