What Red Sox Could Expect From Veteran Infielder In Future

The Boston Red Sox are loaded with options, both on their current big league roster and for those next in line in Triple-A Worcester.

That leaves veteran infielder Vaughn Grissom in a tricky situation. Boston already promoted an extended Kristian Campbell, and infielder Marcelo Mayer has done everything so far in Triple-A to earn his long-awaited promotion. Plus, outfielder Roman Anthony is also expected to join the Red Sox this season, leaving Grissom stuck. There’s still a shot Grissom finds his place with Boston, and even though it’s a currently bleak situation for the 24-year-old, Grissom has plenty to offer.

“He can play a little bit of third base. He can play a little bit of second base,” former Toronto Blue Jays general manager and WooSox broadcaster J.P. Ricciardi told NESN’s “310 To Left” podcast. “I think he’s gonna end up in the Red Sox situation, maybe being a guy that bounces around a lot but gives you good at-bats. I think (he) doesn’t run unbelievably well, but runs enough that he could score from second on a single. He’s an interesting cat. He’s not a guy that I would say is going to be an everyday player, but I think he’s a guy that’s gonna find his way in the lineup a lot and maybe surprise some people because some of the things he does.”

Boston acquired Grissom two offseasons ago from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for starting pitcher Chris Sale. Ironically enough, Grissom was dealt from Atlanta because of its overcrowded infield, which incentivized the organization to find the ex-prospect a suitable landing spot to develop and play routinely. Grissom suffered a groin injury in spring training and was limited to 31 appearances with Boston throughout 2024.

Grissom is currently slashing .301/.381/.865 with three home runs, 12 RBIs and one stolen base across 24 games in Worcester this season.
