Will Joe Sacco Return To Bruins Organization Next Season?

Boston has three options with Sacco

Joe Sacco has been part of the Boston Bruins coaching staff for the last decade.

With the Black and Gold stumbling out of the gate with an 8-9-3 record to begin the 2024-25 campaign, general manager Don Sweeney fired Jim Montgomery and named Sacco as the interim head coach.

NESN’s Sophia Jurksztowicz and Bruins’ broadcast team announcers Andy Brickley and Judd Sirott, discussed the three possible scenarios for Sacco now that Boston’s season is over on the latest episode of “The Hockey Hub” podcast.

“One scenario could be that he comes back as the head coach,” Jurksztowicz said. “The other is that he remains on the staff as an assistant, which would be weird to go from head coach down to an assistant, or he’s not with the Bruins organization anymore.”

Without giving their predictions on the direction the Bruins may decide on, Brickley and Sirott gave their take on what Sacco has to offer if he were to remain in Boston.

“I think the Bruins value Joe Sacco as a hockey coach,” Brickley said. “A guy that has the ability to teach. A guy that has a good understanding of the game. A guy that can message the right way to today’s players.

“I think Joe Sacco as a head coach, I think he went in with his eyes wide open in the situation that he was inheriting when they moved on from Jim Montgomery. I think he understood the challenges that were in front of him.”

Brickley added that while he has “no idea where the Bruins go from here,” he believes the Original Six franchise wants Sacco as “part of the equation” going forward.
