The offense needs consistency and a spark
The Boston Red Sox need a spark and Roman Anthony absolutely could provide it.
Will the 21-year-old now solve every problem and vault Boston into first place? No, but he’s a significant step in the right direction.
The Red Sox are in a pretty tough spot with young players moving all over the field, with both Opening Day starting corner infielders in Alex Bregman and Triston Casas (out for the season), on the injured list. That’s caused a drop-off in consistent production from the lineup.
Anthony continues to mash in Triple-A, and his inevitable call-up should give the Red Sox all of their best available hitters. The question becomes how Boston makes the pieces fit defensively.
NESN’s George Balekji offered his shuffle on “Boston Has Entered The Chat” with moving parts that could create a lineup that looks like this.
Jarren Duran, CF
Rafael Devers, DH
Wilyer Abreu, RF
Roman Anthony, LF
Kristian Campbell, 1B
Marcelo Mayer, SS
Carlos Narvaez, C
David Hamilton, 2B
Ceddanne Rafaela, 3B
Mayer goes to his natural spot at shortstop, Rafaela’s versatility puts him at third, Duran shifts to center as he showed he could do last season and Anthony slots in as the everyday left fielder. Campbell is also set to get game reps at first base for the Red Sox against the Atlanta Braves this weekend.
