An injury might have one campaign on pause
The Boston Red Sox have had some standout individual performances through the first two months of the season.
There’s been team struggles that dropped Boston in the standings, but the team’s franchise player and three premiere additions have all answered the call thus far in 2025. Those stars could find their way to the midsummer classic to represent the Red Sox with the American League in just a few weeks.
With the Red Sox in Atlanta for a weekend series against the Braves, here’s a few Boston players who could be back at Truist Park for the 2025 MLB All-Star Game.
SP Garrett Crochet (1x All-Star)
2025 Stats: 12 GS, 4-4, 2.04 ERA, 75 IP, 56 H, 24 BB, 89 K, 2.71 FIP, 10.7 K/9, 2.4 bWAR
The Red Sox are just 6-6 in his starts, but Crochet is the ace Boston expected him to be after the offseason blockbuster trade with the Chicago White Sox. He eats innings, he strikes hitters out and always gives his team a chance to win.
New York Yankees lefty Max Fried, who signed just before the Crochet trade, will likely get the nod to start for the American League, but the Red Sox southpaw more than pitched to the necessary level for his second All-Star selection.
CL Aroldis Chapman (7x All-Star)
2025 Stats: 25 G, 3-2, 1.96 ERA, 8 SV, 23 IP, 15 H, 8 BB, 31 K, 2.56 FIP, 12.1 K/9, 1.1 bWAR
You wouldn’t know Chapman is in his age-37 season by the numbers in 2025.
He still pitches like one of the great closers of his generation. He’s blown just one save this season and is the stabilizing arm in an inconsistent Red Sox bullpen. He threw the hardest pitch in team history (Statcast Era) and still jumps to triple-digits consistently with his generational fastball.
American League manager Aaron Boone could make a familiar call if the American League enters the ninth inning with a lead in July.
DH Rafael Devers (3x All-Star)
2025 Stats: 59 G, .291/.413/.523, .935 OPS, 12 HR, 52 RBI, 36 R, 46 BB, 61 K, 2.3 bWAR
Despite the March struggles and the position drama, Devers continues to set the standard as one of the best hitters in the league. The Red Sox slugger leads the league in RBI and walks. He also launched his first career walk-off home run on May 17 against the Braves.
The Red Sox slugger did not make the trip to the midsummer classic last season to tend to ailing shoulder issues, but he should be in the starting lineup this time around for the American League.
Honorable Mention: 3B Alex Bregman (2x All-Star)
2025 Stats: 51 G, .299/.385/.553, .938 OPS, 11 HR, 35 RBI, 32 R, 22 BB, 42 K 3.0 bWAR
There’s plenty of team reasons why Bregman’s quad injury devastated the Red Sox from a team perspective.
Specifically, his injury came at a brutal time with Bregman enjoying his best offensive season since 2019 when he last made the All-Star squad and finished as the runner-up for American League MVP.
His right-handed bat continued to shine at Fenway. Unfortunately for Bregman, the timing of his injury could cost him his third-career selection.
