Despite the record, Crochet has been excellent
Garrett Crochet’s excellence cannot get lost in the recent team struggles for the Boston Red Sox.
The huge offseason acquisition from the Chicago White Sox, who the Red Sox extended in the early days of the season, continues to pitch like an ace. He just hasn’t been rewarded like one in the win column.
Crochet holds a 2.04 ERA through 12 starts with 89 strikeouts in 75 innings. That’s ace-caliber production, but the Red Sox are just 6-6 with him on the mound and lost each of his last three starts.
MLB Network’s Jon Heyman declared Thursday that Philadelphia Phillies lefty Jesus Luzardo as the best offseason trade acquisition after the deal with the Miami Marlins. Now, Luzardo has been superb. He’s unbeaten with a 5-0 record with a 2.15 ERA in 11 starts. He’s also on a first-place Phillies team with other horses in the rotation such as Zack Wheeler.
Philadelphia’s offense also shows up for Luzardo to the tune of 5.45 runs of support per start. Meanwhile, Crochet average 3.99 runs of support from the Red Sox. Crochet also has just one fewer win while holding the advantage in ERA, innings and strikeouts over Luzardo.
Would this be a different conversation if Crochet had the same boost from the Red Sox?
That’s not to say Heyman dissed Red Sox representation in this conversation. He listed Crochet as the second-best deal and listed Carlos Narvaez coming over from the New York Yankees in a three-way tie for the fifth-best trade.
