The solo shot was upheld following review
Boston Red Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers has a well-earned reputation as a New York Yankees killer. That narrative only continues to grow after he set a new career milestone in the fifth inning on Sunday.
Facing Yankees starter Max Fried, Devers connected on a 93.6 mph four-seam fastball that just made it over the Green Monster. After a brief review, the home run call was upheld and Devers was credited with his 15th home run of the season.
Devers’ solo shot not only gave his team a 2-0 lead, his home run was the 500th extra-base hit of his nine-year career. The Red Sox would go on to sweep the Yankees at home and extend the team’s winning streak to five games.
Currently ranked 12th in Red Sox history in extra-base hits, Devers will likely pass franchise icons Nomar Garciaparra (507) and Jason Varitek (513) and climb further up the list later this summer. Manny Ramirez is next on the list at 537.
The three-time All-Star recently passed Rico Petrocelli for the tenth spot in career home runs. Currently sitting at 215, Devers is only nine home runs shy of passing Hall of Famer’s Jimmy Foxx (222) and Bobby Doerr (223) for sole possession of eighth place in team history.
Following his latest home run against the Yankees, Devers has connected for 31 career home runs against Boston’s heated rivals. With Red Sox legend Ted Williams topping the list with 67 long balls against New York, Devers clearly has his work cut out for him if he wants to pass the “Splendid Splinter.”
