Alex Cora, Carlos Narvaez’s Catcher Interference Reactions Differ

The catcher's interference call ended the Red Sox's 3-2 loss to the Phillies

The Boston Red Sox had their most bizarre, excruciating loss on Monday night, falling 3-2 to the Philadelphia Phillies due to catcher’s interference.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora and catcher Carlos Narvaez (who was at the center of the play) offered drastically different reactions to the controversial game-ending call following the contest.

“That’s a rule,” Cora said, per Tim Healey of the Boston Globe. “That’s why we got it. They got it right. We just lost a game.”

“It sucks,” Narvaez added. “We don’t want to lose a game, especially in that way.”

The rookie backstop said that he “took accountability” for the result but didn’t agree that he violated the interference rule.

“I don’t feel I was that close to the hitter,” Narvaez said. “Really tough that that happened. That cost us the game. … It was so late. I had the ball, then I felt the contact. Really weird.”

After ending the All-Star break on a 10-game winning streak, the Red Sox have now lost three out of four to begin the second half.

They enter Tuesday in third place in the AL East at 54-48, six games behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays and two games in back of the second-place New York Yankees. Boston is still holding onto the third AL wild-card spot but is just 1 1/2 games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays.
