MLB Rumors: Astros Acquire Former No. 1 Overall Pick From Twins

The star shortstop is coming back to Houston

The Houston Astros have reunited with a three-time All-Star shortstop.

Per ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Astros have acquired Carlos Correa from the Minnesota Twins.

“BREAKING: The Minnesota Twins are trading shortstop Carlos Correa to the Houston Astros, sources tell ESPN,” Passan posted to X.

Correa, 30, is slashing .267/ .319/ .386/ .704 this season to go along with seven home runs and 31 RBIs. The former American League Rookie of the Year won a World Series with the Astros in 2017. He was drafted by Houston with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft.

Correa has shown an extremely high ceiling at certain points in his career. He finished No. 5 in American League MVP voting in 2021.

The Astros are hoping to add to their winning ways in 2025 by adding a player in Correa who has previously been to the mountaintop with the franchise.

Houston entered Thursday with a five-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the American League West division. Seattle, however, has made some massive moves this week, most notably in acquiring slugger Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Passan and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale offered more context about the Correa trade.

“The Correa deal was on life support this morning when the Twins balked at eating a significant part of his salary,” Nightengale wrote. “It now reunites him with his original team. He has waived his no-trade clause.”

“Carlos Correa informed the Astros that he would welcome playing third base with Pena remaining at shortstop,” Nightengale added.

“The Carlos Correa-to-Houston deal looked dead 24 hours ago,” Passan added. “They revisited, bridged a significant financial gap and Houston, with Isaac Paredes out for the season, welcomes home Correa, who waived his no-trade clause to approve the deal.”
