Celtics Rumors: More Moves Coming For Boston After Recent Signing

Boston's offseason work may only just be getting started

NBA free agency is officially underway, and to this point, the Boston Celtics have been fairly quiet, which was to be expected. While they reportedly lost Luke Kornet to the San Antonio Spurs, they reportedly signed center Luka Garza and forward Josh Minott on cheap two-year contracts.

The C’s kicked off the offseason with a splash when they traded both Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis right before the 2025 NBA Draft. The deals were geared towards getting the team under the second apron of the salary cap, which was accomplished after the Porzingis trade.

Boston now finds itself stuck in the middle. On one hand, it could try to build a playoff-contending team around Jaylen Brown and Derrick White next year, even though Jayson Tatum is likely going to miss the entire season. Or, they could become a fully cap-compliant team so that when Tatum returns, they can load up for another title run.

Considering the slow start to free agency, it seems like the latter option is what the team is leaning towards doing. In the wake of the Minott signing, which was reported on Tuesday afternoon, Celtics insider Brian Robb of MassLive claimed that more moves are on the way for Boston.

“(Minott’s) presence though fills up Boston’s roster for the moment with 15 players and also puts their entire payroll back above the second apron for now unofficially,” Robb wrote. “More moves are a certainty to come for Boston in the coming days and weeks for that reason.”

At the very least, the C’s want to be below the second apron of the league’s new salary cap. With the signing of Minott, they have gone back above the second apron, so that all but guarantees the front office will do something in order to get back below that mark.

After being active on the trade market to begin the offseason, chances are that is how Boston will shed more salary in the coming days. Guys like Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang are viewed as the most likely trade candidates, even though they were both recently acquired as part of the Holiday and Porzingis deals.

So while the Celtics haven’t managed to do much since free agency opened, you can bet Brad Stevens and company are working hard behind the scenes in an effort to balance out their roster. As a result, it’s safe to expect more moves to be made shortly.
