MLB Insider Says Division Rival Is Red Sox’s ‘First Choice’ At Trade Deadline

Yandy Diaz has once again been tied to Boston

The Boston Red Sox have serious interest in making deals within the American League East.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman dropped another column full of news and notes on Tuesday, issuing updates on some top storylines that should be followed prior to the Major League Baseball trade deadline on Thursday.

Boston was a popular subject in the story, having been tied to a pair of division rivals who are believed to be on the move.

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Charlie Morton has plenty of other suitors, with the hometown club being named as just one. Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Yandy Diaz, however, is viewed as their “first choice,” according to Heyman.

Diaz, who is slashing .283/.345/.469 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs, has a reputation for lengthening lineups and would serve as an obvious upgrade over the likes of Romy González and Abraham Toro — whether some folks want to admit that or not. Boston has now been tied to him several times in the days leading to the deadline, with Heyman now joining the likes of The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and MassLive’s Chris Cotillo to float the idea.

Will it come true?

The Red Sox will make the ultimate decision, and have until Thursday at 6 p.m. ET.
