Red Sox Considering Reunion With World Series Champion?

How will Craig Breslow cap off the trade deadline?

Are the Boston Red Sox on the verge of adding another catcher to their roster in a last-minute deadline deal?

The Red Sox might be considering a reunion with a two-time World Series champion currently playing for the Minnesota Twins. According to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo, this player couldn’t be more available to the Red Sox.

“Alex Cora remains close with Christian Vázquez and with the Twins in sell mode, one baseball source said ‘all (the Red Sox) have to do is call’ if they wanted to land their former catcher,” Cotillo reported on Thursday afternoon. “Availability isn’t the issue with Vázquez.”

Boston could be weighing the benefit of adding Vázquez, who represents a $10 million cost this year but has an underwhelming .519 OPS on the season. The 34-year-old catcher was originally drafted by the Red Sox in 2008. He was traded to the Houston Astros on August 1, 2022, in a deal that brought Wilyer Abreu to Boston.

Despite Vázquez’s down year, he’d bring defensive reliability. There’s a strong relationship between the catcher and Cora that could lead to a deal.

Vázquez spent eight seasons with Boston and was part of the 2018 World Series team. He also won a ring in 2022 as a member of the Astros. Bringing aboard a familiar face with a ton of experience could further enhance Boston’s veteran leadership, which is led by Alex Bregman.

With the deadline a few hours away, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is the busiest man in the organization at the moment.
