Red Sox Reportedly Acquire Right-Hander Before Deadline

Dustin May is headed from Los Angeles to Boston

The Boston Red Sox are acquiring right-handed pitcher Dustin May from the Los Angeles Dodgers, as first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal confirmed Passan’s report.

Outfield prospect James Tibbs III is headed to the Dodgers, Fansided’s Robert Murray reported approximately 17 minutes after the initial report. The Red Sox acquired Tibbs when they traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants last month.

The 27-year-old May has a 4.85 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) during the 2025 campaign. May has thrown 104 innings and is 6-7 on the season.

May is playing on an expiring contract after signing a one-year, $2.135 million agreement. He will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

A third-round pick in 2016, May has a 3.71 career ERA in 65 games (52 starts). He missed significant time due to a myriad of injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2021 and flexor tendon surgery in 2023. A bizarre torn esophagus caused him to miss significant time in 2024, as well.

The Red Sox made two trades in the days leading up to the MLB trade deadline. Boston acquired left-handed reliever Steve Matz and May before the 6 p.m. ET deadline.
