Red Sox Select First-Round Infielder In Recent MLB Mock Draft

Boston projected to take high school third baseman

The 2025 MLB Draft is right around the corner, meaning the Red Sox will have new prospects joining their organization.

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel projected Boston will select Gavin Fien with its No. 15 pick in the first round. Fien is a high school third baseman from Great Oaks High School. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound third baseman won MLB Develops MVP honors at a High School All-American Game.

Fien batted .400 for Team USA in the 18U World Cup qualifier in Panama.

On MLB.com’s list, they have him ranked at No. 22, but Fien is ranked at No. 12 on McDaniel’s rankings.

“Fien has a good chance to land here, as long rumored,” McDaniel wrote. “I think he’s underrated due to (an) uneven spring after he was one of the better hitters on the summer circuit.”

McDaniels said that Xavier Neyens and Gavin Kilen are also names that the Red Sox could draft in the first round.

Neyens is another high school third baseman who plays for Mount Vernon High School in Washington. MLB.com says the 6-foot-4 lefty has the potential to be an elite hitter from the left side of the plate.

Kilen was drafted by the Red Sox out of high school in 2022, but he opted to go the college route, playing for Louisville before transferring to the University of Tennessee.

The infielder says his favorite professional baseball team is the Red Sox and that his favorite athlete is David Ortiz.

He’s listed as a contact hitter who excels at second base with his speed and arm strength.

“With outstanding hand-eye coordination, a quick left-handed swing and feel for the barrel, Kilen continues to excel as a contact hitter,” MLB.com wrote. “He tends to swing too often and chase breaking pitches, sometimes putting pitches in play without much authority and rarely drawing walks.”

The 2025 MLB Draft is set for Sunday with the first round at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN and MLB Network.
