Trade Rumors Surrounding Dodgers Pitcher Intensify After Poor Start Vs. Red Sox

Was that Dustin May's final start in a Dodgers uniform?

If Sunday was Dustin May’s last start in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform, it didn’t go well.

May took the loss as the Dodgers dropped their series finale with the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. He blew a 3-1 lead in his final inning of work, surrendering an RBI triple to Roman Anthony and a go-ahead two-run homer to Alex Bregman in the bottom of the fifth.

May at least completed the frame before exiting, finishing the day with four runs and five hits allowed in five innings of work. In 104 innings this year, he’s 6-7 with a 4.85 ERA, a 4.69 FIP, a 1.35 WHIP and -0.4 WAR.

With the 27-year-old righty slated to become a free agent this winter, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reported last week that Los Angeles could be looking to move on from May before the July 31 MLB Trade Deadline.

May has struggled after missing all of last year with injuries, especially lately. His ERA is 6.69 over his last seven starts, making him even more likely to be traded.

With the Dodgers leading the National League West and looking to defend their World Series title, they can’t afford to remain patient with May much longer, especially with Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki expected to return from the injured list soon. After six seasons with Los Angeles, perhaps he’d benefit from a change of scenery.

Despite his struggles this year, May has remained healthy and could provide rotation depth for a contender. His 104 innings are nearly twice his previous career high, however, so his workload may need to be monitored down the stretch.

While the Red Sox are pursuing starting pitching at the deadline, they have not been linked to May, as they are seeking a starting pitcher who’s under team control beyond this year.
