MLB Rumors: Yankees Linked To Cardinals Star As Deadline Nears

The New York Yankees are closely monitoring the St. Louis Cardinals.

If the Cardinals initiate a fire sale, expect the Yankees to be first in line for St. Louis All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan, as shared by New York Post’s Jon Heyman on Friday.

“All-Star INF Brendan Donovan would interest the Yankees, if he’s available. Many teams would be. Astros, too. Unclear how deep Cardinals sale will be.”

Donovan has turned into the Cardinals’ best position player in 2025. The 28-year-old is hitting .296 with a .797 OPS to go along with nine home runs and 42 RBIs. He also provides elite defense, having bagged a Gold Glove Award in 2022.

Donovan has two more years of team control remaining, per Spotrac. It would be surprising to see St. Louis move on from Donovan, but it’s still unclear just how aggressive the Cardinals will be.

The Cardinals entered Friday nine games back in the National League Central but only 2 1/2 games back in the wild card. St. Louis is widely expected to sell, but their efforts in that regard are complicated by multiple players holding no-trade clauses, including eight-time All-Star Nolan Arenado and ace Sonny Gray.

Donovan landing with the Yankees would be a shock to the other teams in the American League East. Meanwhile, the Yankees are reportedly still in pursuit of Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suárez, as are several teams.
