Ex- Red Sox Catcher ‘Loves’ Roman Anthony Contract Extension

Anthony's deal has become a hot topic across the media landscape today

The Boston Red Sox sent shock waves through Major League Baseball on Wednesday when ESPN’s Jeff Passan revealed on social media that the team is reportedly finalizing an eight-year $130 million contract extension with Roman Anthony that will keep the rookie slugger in Boston until the 2034 season.

That deal, which also reportedly includes escalators that could bring the total value of the contract to $230 million, will begin in 2026 and run through the 2034 season. The 21-year-old has certainly impressed since making his MLB debut on July 9 and is batting .283 with 45 hits, two home runs and 19 RBIs in 159 at-bats.

With news of Anthony’s extension generating plenty of industry buzz since Passan’s social media post went viral on Wednesday afternoon, The Foul Territory podcast was quick to discuss the topic while streaming live across multiple platforms. Former Red Sox catcher and Foul Territory co-host A. J. Pierzynski applauded the move, believing it to be mutually beneficial to both player and ball club.

“I love it for both sides,” said Pierzynski. “If they think he’s a dude and listen, how do you tell a 21-year-old kid, don’t take $130 could be $230 million?”

Pierzynski also laughed at the notion that signing a contract extension at this point in Anthony’s career could undercut his future earning potential.

“I don’t care who you are. Nobody on Earth would say at 21 years old, ‘Hey, here’s $130 could be $230 million,’ said Pierzynski. “They’re gonna be like, ‘Let me see? I could cost myself $7 to $ 10 million. No, I’m not gonna take that.’ Bull crap! Everyone on earth should take this.”
