Former Red Sox Slugger Filmed TV Cameo After Dominant Game

It's going to be hard to act as good as he hit

Kyle Schwarber had quite the eventful Thursday evening.

The star designated hitter powered the Philadelphia Phillies to a 19-4 win over the Atlanta Braves with four home runs and nine RBIs. Schwarber, who ended the 2021 campaign with the Boston Red Sox, forced his way into the National League MVP conversation by bolstering his NL leads to 49 long balls and 119 RBIs this season.

His night wasn’t finished just yet. According to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, Schwabrer filmed a scheduled guest role on “Abbott Elementary” less than an hour after the game ended.

Gelb said the ABC sitcom asked the Phillies months ago if any of their players were willing to appear on the show. The team presented the opportunity to the “dependable” and “steady” Schwarber, who returned to the field in full uniform to film a scene with “Abbott Elementary” creator and star Quinta Brunson.

The popular comedy, a mockumentary set in a Philadelphia public school, has previously featured local sports stars Jalen Hurts, Jason Kelce and Andre Iguodala. Schwarber also has a high bar to clear in terms of Phillies players on TV, as everyone can only hope his guest spot is as big a home run as Chase Utley’s role on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

With the fifth season of “Abbott Elementary” premiering on Oct. 1, the timing of Schwarber’s cameo will be interesting.

If he has his way, Schwarber will be playing postseason baseball when the show returns. Yet the 32-year-old could also conclude his Phillies tenure around that time. He’s in the final season of a four-year contract with a chance to cash in on his monster campaign this offseason.
