Red Sox Fall Short In Bid For Historic Sweep Of Yankees

For the first time since June 6, the New York Yankees finally beat the Boston Red Sox.

The Red Sox were unable to sweep the Yankees in the Bronx this weekend, losing Sunday’s series finale 7-2. The loss snapped Boston’s eight-game winning streak against New York — the franchise’s longest since 2009.

While the Red Sox took three of four from the Yankees, they fell short of completing their first four-game sweep at Yankee Stadium since July 1939.

New York bounced back after getting blown out 12-1 on Saturday, mashing four home runs (two apiece from Trent Grisham and Jazz Chisholm Jr.) and limiting Boston to just two runs on five hits.

Meanwhile, Dustin May endured his worst start yet with the Red Sox, yielding five runs and three homers in 4 1/3 innings. He was outdueled by Carlos Rodón, who allowed just one hit (but five walks) and two runs in 5 2/3 innings.

While the Yankees salvaged the series finale, it was still an impressive weekend for Boston. The Red Sox outscored their rivals 21-11, clinched the season series and moved half a game in front of New York for second place in the AL East.

The two teams have one more series remaining between them from Sept. 12-14 at Fenway Park — a series that will likely have major playoff implications.

In the meantime, Boston continues its road trip with four games against the Baltimore Orioles, who swept a two-game series at Fenway Park last week. The Red Sox will try to avenge those losses and stay ahead of the Yankees in the standings.

Meanwhile, New York hosts the Washington Nationals for a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.

With both clubs facing last-place teams, they’ll try to make the most of their easy matchups heading into Labor Day Weekend.
