Red Sox Players Staying Course After Quiet Deadline

The group is happy to stay together

By many accounts, the Boston Red Sox had a disappointing trade deadline. While many other American League teams supplemented their rosters, the Red Sox stayed fairly quiet, adding only Dustin May and Steven Matz.

Neither addition has impacted the team too much to this point. Matz pitched a scoreless inning in Saturday’s 7-3 win over the Houston Astros, and May is yet to debut for the team. He’ll start Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

Despite the lack of activity, the Red Sox swept the Astros with a 6-1 win on Sunday and currently hold the top American League Wild Card spot. While fans might be concerned about the lack of activity at the deadline, starting pitcher Lucas Giolito is happy with the roster as currently constructed.

“Especially with how we’ve been playing, I think it’s important to keep the group together and keep everyone jelled together and firing on all cylinders,” Giolito said.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow calls the shots and is largely responsible for the quiet deadline. Still, he likes the 26 players on the team and wants to see them continue winning games.

“I think there’s a lot to be excited about and reason for optimism. We’ve got to go out and keep playing the way that we do,” Breslow said. “But I’m not sure there was going to be a ton that was or wasn’t going to happen coming out in the deadline that was going to kind of knock these guys off the path they’re on.”

If the Red Sox do continue playing at a high level, they could set their sights on the division title. The Kansas City Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, helping the Red Sox pull within three games of the division lead.
