Red Sox Reportedly Promote Multiple Top Prospects After Deadline Trades

Are more promotions on the way?

A pair of notable Boston Red Sox prospects are ascending the minor league ladder.

Outfielder Miguel Bleis and infielder Mikey Romero were promoted to Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, respectively, according to Andrew Parker of Beyond the Monster. Chris Hatfield of SoxProspects.com confirmed both promotions in an X post on Friday morning.

Bleis will fill one of two Double-A outfield voids left by prospects James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard, both of whom were traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday for pitcher Dustin May. It wouldn’t be surprising to see another outfielder currently in Single-A Greenville, potentially Nelly Taylor (ranked 21st by SoxProspects) and Yophery Rodriguez (ranked 37th), also promoted to Portland to fill the other spot.

As for Romero, he’ll fill an open roster spot in Worcester left by first baseman Blaze Jordan, who was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for left-hander Steven Matz on Wednesday night.

Romero, a first-round pick in 2022, was ranked 11th by SoxProspects at the time of this writing, while Bleis was ranked 13th. Both players could rise following the trading of Tibbs, who was ranked 10th.

Ranked 72nd nationally by Baseball America in 2023, Bleis’ prospect stock is down following a pair of underwhelming, injury-filled campaigns. The speedy centerfielder showed improvement before his promotion, however, hitting .226 with 13 homers, 20 stolen bases and a .735 OPS in 77 games for the Greenville Drive. The 21-year-old remains a five-tool talent with one of the highest ceilings in Boston’s system.

Romero, who battled various injuries throughout his first three seasons with the Red Sox, has boosted his stock this season with a .254 average, eight home runs and a .756 OPS in 66 games for the Sea Dogs. The 21-year-old primarily played shortstop and second base while in Portland.
