Red Sox Release Struggling Veteran

Walker Buehler was released Friday

Walker Buehler’s time with the Boston Red Sox is over. The Red Sox released Buehler ahead of Friday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, per official release.

Buehler’s time with in Boston was turbulent. Over 112 1/3 innings, the veteran registered a 5.45 ERA. He was demoted to the bullpen, but only made one relief appearance before being released.

The righty had a mutual option for 2026 that the team was not likely to exercise. Now, Buehler hits free agency with a month left in the regular season.

Buehler has until Monday to sign with a new team to be eligible for the postseason. It remains to be seen if a team will be interested in the veteran’s services. The Los Angeles Dodgers make sense as a potential landing spot given their familiarity with Buehler and his success with the organization.

The Red Sox needed to clear a roster spot to activate Payton Tolle. By releasing Buehler, they cleared a spot on both the active roster and the 40-man roster. Tolle will wear number 70.

The Red Sox also recalled Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester, and optioned Jhostynxon Garcia back to the minor leagues. Garcia was 1-7 with two walks and five strikeouts in five games with Boston.

The Red Sox begin a three-game series against the Pirates on Friday.
