Roman Anthony can't stop breaking records
It’s been a historic rookie season for Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony, who keeps doing things that haven’t been done in years, if ever.
Over his first 56 games, Anthony has established himself as one of the best hitters in baseball thanks to his elite plate discipline and ability to hit the ball hard. His power stroke has been coming around lately, too, making him even more dangerous at the plate.
Before going 0-for-4 against the Miami Marlins on Sunday, Anthony was having a historic week. In his previous five games, he batted .294/.500/.706 with two homers, two steals, seven walks and 10 runs.
According to OptaSTATS, Anthony was the first MLB rookie since 1901 to reach all of those marks in a five-game span.
The 21-year-old showed everything that makes him such a special player, including his speed, batting eye and emerging power.
Despite not debuting until June 9, Anthony is already a top candidate for AL Rookie of the Year honors. All he’s done is hit .276/.398/.434 (133 OPS+) with four homers, four steals, 17 doubles, 37 runs, 35 walks and 2.1 WAR, helping the Red Sox surge into playoff contention.
Boston recently rewarded him with an eight-year, $130 million contract extension, and it’s easy to see why. An incredibly mature and polished hitter for his age, he already looks like a great investment, especially if he keeps getting better with experience.
With Anthony locked up for the foreseeable future, he appears poised to keep making plenty of history in a Red Sox uniform.
