Why Injured Red Sox Outfielder Still Isn’t Game Ready

The Boston lineup misses Wilyer Abreu’s presence

The Boston Red Sox are still waiting for Wilyer Abreu to get back on the field.

The outfielder landed on the injured list Aug. 21 with a right calf strain, and the club originally expected him to miss only the minimum 10 days.

That timeline has passed with no clear return date. Manager Alex Cora acknowledged the recovery has been slower than planned.

“Are we concerned? Yes and no. He’ll be back at one point, but I think it’s been longer than expected,” Cora said, as reported by Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.

Abreu has been able to swing the bat and participate in light defensive work, but running continues to be the obstacle.

He told reporters he plans to begin a running progression soon, though it is uncertain if that will coincide with the team’s upcoming trip to Phoenix and Sacramento.

To stay sharp at the plate, Abreu has worked with the Trajekt pitching machine, which replicates major league velocity and pitch shapes.

He explained that using the machine keeps his timing intact while sidelined and gives him confidence that he will be ready to contribute once cleared.

Before the injury, Abreu was producing at a strong clip, slashing .253/.325/.486 with 22 home runs, tied for the team lead. His defense in right field, highlighted by Gold Glove recognition, has also been a stabilizing factor.

Boston has relied on Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela to cover the outfield, but the lineup is at its strongest with Abreu available.

The Red Sox hope patience now ensures a healthier, more impactful version of their right fielder for the stretch run.
