Red Sox’s Kristian Campbell Tries Another New Position In Minors

Is he an option there for Boston?

The Boston Red Sox still haven’t recalled Kristian Campbell to help a short-handed lineup, but he played a position that’s currently a sore spot for Boston.

Campbell has moved from second base to first base during his stint at Triple-A Worcester, and the rookie started at left field last month. The 23-year-old continued to shift spots, starting Sunday’s game at right field.

Beyond the Monster’s Andrew Parker noted that it marked the first time Campbell started at right field since a 2023 game at the Florida Complex League.

Campbell would probably be back in the big leagues right now if the Red Sox trusted his glove at second base. Injuries to outfielders Roman Anthony and Wilyer Abreu have prompted Ceddanne Rafaela to focus on center field again.

Red Sox second basemen are collectively hitting .252/.314/.398, with Campbell offering the best offensive production in April. Yet he still has the third-worst defensive runs saved (-15) at the position despite getting demoted in June.

First base presented an opening at a less demanding spot, but Nathaniel Lowe has made an immediate impact since the Red Sox signed him last month. A once crowded outfield is suddenly missing an everyday right fielder to accompany Rafaela and left fielder Jarren Duran.

Campbell is an unlikely solution to that problem in September. Yet he seems willing to help, however needed, to increase his chances of rejoining the majors this season.

His bat looks ready for a second chance. Campbell is hitting .272/.385/.431 for the WooSox after tallying two more hits on Sunday.
