Rafaela brought one back
Ceddanne Rafaela and center field go together like peanut butter and jelly. He appears to have a chance at catching every ball hit in his direction, and has a cannon of an arm to go with his range.
With Roman Anthony out injured, there’s more playing time available in the outfield, so the Red Sox don’t have to play Rafaela at second base to get him in the lineup.
Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito was glad Rafaela was in center field on Saturday. In the fifth inning, Corbin Carroll drove a ball to deep right-center field. Rafaela ran it down, timed his jump and came down with the ball, colliding with the wall in the process. You can watch the catch here.
Giolito was visibly impressed by the play. He appeared to mouth “holy [expletive]” twice before he tipped his cap to his center fielder.
The catch was nothing new for Rafaela. Earlier this season, he said that if the ball is in the park, he thinks he should catch it. On Saturday, he caught a ball that wasn’t going to stay in the park until he intervened, and he did it with his instincts.
“You cannot really think. It happens quick. I just tried to catch it,” Rafaela said.
Later in the game, Rafaela wasn’t as fortunate with the glove. A ball fell between he and Jarren Duran, who seemed to fail to communicate, though Rafaela took the blame after the game.
“I thought I had it, I called it, and I didn’t,” Rafaela said.
Despite the robbery, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Red Sox, 5-1.
