It's Vladdy and Barry on this list, that's it.
If you happen to be one of the few people left on Earth who doubts Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s status as a generational talent, consider the following stat. The Toronto Blue Jays‘ first baseman is now the only player besides Barry Bonds to have reached base 14 times and hit two home runs in the first five World Series fames of their career.
Bonds accomplished this feat in 2002 with the San Francisco Giants, who ended up falling to the Los Angeles (then Anaheim) Angels in seven games.
Guerrero, of course, it looking to avoid a similar team fate that Bonds and San Fran suffered in ’02. The Blue Jays are one win away from the franchise’s first World Series since 1993, but Guerrero and Co. will have to take down the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers, who are looking to become the first back-to-back World Series champion since the New York Yankees three-peated from 1998 to 2000.
To say that Vladdy has been on a heater this postseason would be an understatement. Guerrero is playing the best baseball of his life at the best possible time, batting .415 this playoffs with 27 hits, 8 homers, 15 RBI and 17 runs scored in 16 games entering Game 6 of the World Series on Friday night at Rogers Centre.
Anytime you find yourself alone on a list with Barry Bonds, you’re probably doing something right, which is why Guerrero Jr. has to be pinching himself every now and then. On the other hand, Vladdy was born for this kind of stardom. And with one more win, he can do something that Bonds never achieved — hoist a World Series trophy.
Blue Jays fans will be in the rarest of forms on Friday in Toronto as Guerrero and the rest of the Jays’ lineup tries to solve the unflappable Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who has been nearly unstoppable in his last two, complete-game performances for LA.
