Boston opens its season on Wednesday against Washington
The Boston Bruins failed to make the playoffs last season and made some major changes to the team this offseason.
Boston hired Marco Sturm as its head coach and added some depth players to the roster to make it harder to play against. The Bruins’ front office has made it clear the team wants to compete for the playoffs this season.
However, ahead of the Bruins’ season opener against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday, Sturm said he wants to see growth from his team and isn’t putting lofty expectations on the team.
“I want to see growth,” Sturm said on Tuesday after practice. “I want to see us come together. I’m not going to say we’ve got to make the playoffs, we have to be in a playoff spot by November or this and that. No. No. I want to see us grow.”
“I want my players to play the way we all want them to play. And get that identity back. Not just one day. Not just one period. But very, very consistent. That’s my goal right now. That’s it. Nothing else.”
Sturm isn’t putting any playoff expectations on the team, as he believes that if they show growth, it will lead to wins and success.
The first-year coach wants to take it one game at a time and isn’t focusing on long-term goals.
Boston’s home opener is on Oct. 9 against the Chicago Blackhawks.
