Craig Breslow Addresses Red Sox Star’s Uncertain Future

Will Alex Bregman return to Boston?

The Boston Red Sox held their end-of-season press conference on Monday, and many topics came up about the team’s future — specifically the upcoming offseason.

One topic on everyone’s mind is whether Alex Bregman will return to the Red Sox. According to a recent report from MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Bregman is considered “a near certainty” to opt out of the remaining two years and $80 million on his contract and test free agency this winter.

He can’t officially do so until after the World Series, however, leaving his contract situation up in the air for now. Fortunately for Boston, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow — who signed Bregman last offseason — is well aware of his importance to the team and his value to the organization.

“I will not miss an opportunity to talk about his contributions on the field, in the clubhouse, to the coaching staff, to the front office,” Breslow said. “Every conversation we’ve had, I learn something. I think that impact and influence have rubbed off on his teammates, and by all accounts, he’s loved his time in Boston as well.”

While Breslow declined to comment on any ongoing negotiations with Bregman, he continued to praise the All-Star third baseman, calling him “a great player, a proven winner, a strong defender, someone who fits this park really well and our roster.”

Bregman was one of the Red Sox’s best players in 2025, batting .273/.360/.462 with 18 homers, 62 RBI and 3.5 WAR as one of the team’s three All-Star representatives. He also helped the team off the field, frequently giving younger teammates advice and batting tips.

The 31-year-old’s leadership and presence are especially valuable for Boston’s young roster, which doesn’t have many veterans. Bregman would be difficult to replace, and it sounds like Breslow knows it.
