Kevin Durant Extension: Further Details From Shams Charania

KD is likely to retire with the Rockets.

NBA superstar Kevin Durant has finalized a two-year, $90 million extension with the Houston Rockets, making him the highest earner in the history of the league.

Following news of the deal, ESPN’s Shams Charania delivered some more details on SportsCenter while speaking to SC anchor Jay Harris.

“(Durant) now has a total of three years and about $145 million on his Rockets deal,” Charania said.

“His business partner, Rich Kleiman, tells me he also has a player option in 2027-28 … this sets Durant up to retire in Houston.”

Charania also noted that Durant’s extension is lower than the $120 million amount he was capable of pursuing on the market.

“(Durant’s) deal is … $30 million under the max contract of $ 120 (million) that he was eligible for,” Charania said. “Significantly less, but he understood when he chose Houston as a preferred trade destination in June that he’d be sacrificing money potentially for the long term in order to partner with the franchise … this now gives the Rockets some team-building flexibility moving forward, and Durant does lock in significant money here.”

Durant didn’t show any signs of decline in 2024-25 with the Phoenix Suns. He was named to his 15th NBA All-Star team, adding to a resumé that is truly among the greatest in NBA history.

Now the question is, will Durant be able to add a third ring to his collection during his time in Houston, which is looking like the final phase of his career?
